Comparisons And Contrast

By Dee Scown

Have you seen the cartoon of different animals all being assessed for the same test?

Their success is based on the ability to climb a tree! A monkey will clearly succeed but the fish or the elephant? Nah, they will fail.

Does this resonate for you? Does it have meaning in your own life, the life of your child or perhaps another relative or friend? It is true the system of one size fits all is failing many, perhaps many more than we realise.

What has come to light recently is that the business world is carrying this concept on further on in people’s lives. Not just educationally (covered in an earlier Blog) and that is an ongoing hurdle in many new business fields, but also between businesses.

What I mean by that is there is an attitude that someone else has no business credibility or knowledge unless they have achieved in the field of the person making that judgement. What has been interesting is watching someone make assumptions about another when they have not asked any questions of that person.

So where does this come from?

I used to get into trouble for asking too many questions, and when I met my husband I discovered that his whole family don’t ask questions, which floored me. They would be punished if they queried anything. In their case, there were activities going on that the adult felt they need to hide sadly. So, is this the case with others, or is there an arrogance at times where people assume that others know nothing?

Are we so busy telling our own story that we are not listening properly?

If we are to be successful in our pursuits then we need to connect with our tribe effectively, the only way to do that is to ask and listen. I know I need to be more mindful in this area.

Are you with me?

Let us all slow down and listen more, and please don’t be offended if someone asks you a question, you can always tell them that you don’t wish to answer, and that is okay too.

With much love to all.

May you all celebrate with loved ones, remember good times, and feel the love of the Universe in this season as you honour Christmas, Pancha Ganapati, Hanukkah, Yule, Kwanzaa and yourselves.

Luv
